With the ban on Former Number One Maria Sharapova coming to an end in the late April, she has been invited to play at the Madrid Open, said Tournament Organizers.
The Official Tweets
Madrid Open Begins From May 5th. “Sharapova requested an invitation to play… (She) is one of the best players of the last 15 years and also a past winner of our tournament, In Madrid she always plays well and I’m sure she will come back to the courts highly motivated and hoping to do well.” said event director Manolo Santanana.
This would be Maria’s third tournament in the confirmed tournaments that she would be playing in, including Stuttgart Open & the Rome Masters starting from May 15. She will return with a ranking of zero, and her short term goal would be to collect the 600-odd points that would allow her to earn qualification for the grand slams under her own steam.
At the moment, she is certain to need a wild card from the French Tennis Federation in order to play the French Open. But if she performs well in Stuttgart, Madrid and Rome, there is a chance that she could avoid forcing the All England Club into making the same decision about Wimbledon. A run to the final of one of these events would probably be enough to claim direct entry, or a couple of semi-final finishes.
