Iran clinched the Wrestling World Cup by beating USA in the finals held on Friday. Olympic silver medalist Komeil Ghasemi defeated American Nick Gwiazdowski 5-0, giving Iran a 5-3 win in the gold medal final. The 2017 Freestyle World Cup commenced in Kermanshah, western Iran, on February 16 and ended on 17th February.
The Iranian Freestyle Wrestling team took the World Cup title for the sixth year in a row on Friday, having recorded straight titles from 2012 proving their dominance in the sport on International Level. Azerbaijan finished in the third place after defeating Turkey in the bronze-medal playoff that ended 7-1. Russia consoled with the fifth place after defeating Mongolia 7-1, and Georgia stood seventh after emerging victorious from its match with India 7-1.
Iran’s 27-year-old Hassan Sabzali Rahimi defeated US freestyle wrestler Anthony Ramos 6-0 in the men’s 57-kg weight category. Logan Stieber conceded a 2-6 defeat to Iran’s Masoud Esmaeilpoorjouybari in the 61-kg weight category. Local wrestler Meysam Nasiri defeated Frank Aniello Molinaro by 5-4 in the 65-kg weight category.
Mostafa Hosseinkhani defeated his American counterpart James Green by 2-0 in the 70-kg category. In the 74-kg category, American player Jordan Ernest Burroughs (World and Olympic Champion) went to great pains to clinch a close victory by 3-2 over Iranian opponent Peyman Yarahmadi.
Later, Hassan Yazdani Cherati of Iran lost to American wrestler David Taylor 8-4 by a technical fall in the 84-kg category. Iran’s Amir Mohammadi was not successful in his Herculean task to overcome Kyle Frederick Snyder in the 97-kg, and fell to him 6-0. In the 125-kg weight category, Komeil Ghasemi registered an emphatic 5-0 win over American contestant Nick Gwiazdowski, and took top honors.
