Relive Sourav Ganguly’s Best Innings against Sri Lanka in WC 1999- A Fanboy Moment

26th May-1999 World Cup, The Cooper Associates County Ground at Taunton  -India had registered mere 6 runs on the scoreboard when Lankan’s legend pacer Chaminda Vaas bowled out Sadagoppan Ramesh under an over of the 5th ball. India are now 6/1 in 5 balls.

Chaminda was in a fantastic and unleashing form where wickets were just popping out from the pitch whenever he was bowling and the Sri Lankans fans were having a gala time and a fun match to enjoy. Indian fans on the other hand were waiting for some miracle to happen when Ganguly aka Dada came to rescue of the Indian Team.


Ganguly squared off the first ball of the third over to he ropes when India were 13-1 after 3 overs. After that he saw no stopping when in the course he completed his half-century on the 4th ball of the 23rd over and India were altogether 130-1. Had he just finished his half-century in the previous over, he didn’t stopped there and went on hitting the ball for a maximum in the very next over in a glamorous style.

Sourav completed his century in the 39th over when India had scored a total of 228 and were one down. On the other hand, Rahul Dravid was also giving full support to Sourav from the other hand and was helping in rotating the strike and was not letting the run rate go down.

Balls were disappearing all around the park and was just a spectacular innings, It was a feat for eyes for every Indian fan and a reason to cheer for Team India. Ganguly smashed 17 fours and 7 sky-scrappers.

The Bengal tiger thrashed each and every bowler whom he faced and smashed an astonishing innings of 183 runs, highest by an Indian cricketer in World Cup history till date. Ganguly was dismissed by Wickramasinghe but until then he and Dravid had pushed the Indian team to the driver’s seat. India went on to win this game by giant difference of 157 runs.
