Fifa Confederations Cup Review: Australia 2 Germany 3

World Champions Germany defeated Asian Cup winners Australia in a well-contested match in Sochi. The Germans took the lead courtesy of Lars Stindl but parity was restored before the break after a goalkeeping error by Bernd Leno allowed Tom Rogic to equalise for the kangaroos.

Germany was quick to regain the lead through Julian Draxler from the penalty spot late in the first half and doubled their advantage early in the second through Leon Goretxa.

The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology once again made the headlines as Australia were back in the game in the 56th minute when Tomi Juric was awarded a goal following a VAR referral. Joachim Lows side managed to see the game through and ensured a winning start to the competition.

Germany will next play Chile while Australia will play Cameron in the next round of games.
