Chelsea went on to clinch the top 4 for the time being away from Watford as they stole 3 points under Hornets’ noses at home to get within touching distance of Tottenham and the Manchester Clubs.
Marcos Silva’s side had a decent start to the match as Chelsea were just trying to tighten the noose up a bit. A controversial corner and acres of space allowed the Spaniard to unleash his lethal right foot and lash it in the top bins as the ball took a hard deflection from the away post to slot in home comfortably.
Chelsea looked comfortable for the most parts of the first half with David Luiz effectively shutting out the nuisance that is Troy Deeney. However, Chelsea too, conceded on a set piece as the visitors went satisfied drawing level just at the stroke of half-time with a brilliant Doucoure half volley.
Watford entered into the second half with all guns blazing and were soon rewarded with a brilliant Roberto Pereyra goal who teed off a brilliant cut in pass from Richarlison.
It took Chelsea 22 minutes to get back into the game as Michy Batshayi silenced the travellers with a very Morata-esque header.
In a surprizing turn of events, Cesare Azpilicueta slotted in the winner for blues from a header picked up from the spoils off a missed contact from Batshuayi. Watford could blame no one but themselves as they allowed not one but two Chelsea players to get in within touching distance of the post unguarded.
In typical Chelsea fashion, Michy Batshuayi capitalized on a lapse in concentration from a forward-thinking defender as he wrestled his way into a brilliant solo goal reminiscent of Diego Costa’s sole winner against West Brom last season.
Chelsea clinched the top 4 and will remain there unless Arsenal or Burnley win with a net 5 goal margin or more. Chelsea look comfortable and will be looking on to get into rhythm after a disastrous and unfortunate turn of events following the international break.
Although the form is not yet there for Chelsea players, it is at least pleasing to see their determination proving a rumour of an alleged dressing room coup against Conte false.
Chelsea fans, are you satisfied with the result?
