The premier league sides have had a hard time in europe since Chelsea’s unexpected triumph in Munich dating back to 2012 with only Man city making it to the semifinals in this period in 2016 when they were narrowly eliminated by Real Madrid.
Although this season it seems that the gods have smiled on the English sides as all 5 sides managed to reach the last 16 of Europe’s elite competition and 3 of them have had reasonably easy draws.
1. Basel – Man City
The citizens have had the draw of their dreams and it would take more than a miracle for the Swiss champions to eliminate an unbeaten City side playing their best ever football. Although the swiss champions cannot be taken lightly due to their experience in Europe and strong home record.
2. Sevilla – Man United
The task for the red devils may seem easy at first but one thing is certain Sevilla won’t go down without a fight as Liverpool found out in their two encounters with the Spanish side. Sevilla have been poor recently as demonstrates by their recent thrashing in the Bernabaeu but on their night and especially at the Ramon Sanchez Pichuan they are more than capable of beating anyone. Mourinho’s men need to make sure they do not leave themselves a mountain to climb in the second leg.
Cristiano Ronaldo speaks about his future targets and his rivalry with Lionel Messi
Messi: “I hope football pays its debt to me.”
3. Porto- Liverpool
It’s been a long time since Porto were considered serious contenders in Europe but their experience and Liverpool’s inexperience of grinding out results in Europe may be a key factor in the tie. Liverpool need to sort themselves out at the back and avoid conceding easy goals especially at home.
4.Juventus – Spurs
Totenham should be considered extremely unlucky to have drawn last season’s runner’s up and it would require two top performances from the North Londoners to eliminate the Old Lady. It would be a battle of attack and defence as Chellini and co are on of the best in business at the back and Delli Alli, Kane and Son would need to make the most of the few chances that come their way. It would also need a strong defenaive display to stop the mesmerizing Paulo Dybala and Gonzalo Higuain in order to create an upset and make it to the quarter finals.
5. Chelsea – Barcelona
A match made in heaven as this is a tie known for its drama, controversies and a battle of two distinct philosophies of playing football. Barcelona must be considered as favorites considering their perfect record so far this season but the blaugrana are no way near their best and if Chelsea can replicate their heroics of 2012 once again they would have a great chance to go through. Lionel Messi would be the key once again as he needs to put his record straight against the blues who have more than troubled him in the past. If Chelsea can stop him from receiving the ball and take a lead to the Camp Nou then they are surely more than capable of having a decent chance to create an upset.
