Can Manchester United’s Dreadful December Cause Problems for Jose Mourinho

What may have seemed to be an amazing start to the last month of 2017 with a thumping 3-1 victory at the Emirates, Manchester United have only gone downhill since, losing a potential title deciding Manchester Derby and then crashing out of EFL Cup & drawing 3 matches in the League in progression.

Manchester United were 8 points behind the leaders and cross city rivals Manchester City at the start of December, but with the end of the month they find themselves 15 points behind City. They were also knocked out of the EFL Cup by minnows Bristol City in what proved to be a major upset. This shows what a terrible December they have had.

They started off the month with a thumping 3-1 victory against Arsenal. The attack was on fire that day and the defense stood tall and strong with a touch of brilliance from David de Gea. But the victory came at a cost, with Paul Pogba receiving an undeserving red card, ruling him out of three straight domestic games and a crucial Manchester Derby. The victory, though, gave the Red side of Manchester some hopes for the Derby, but their hopes were shattered in rather a dull way. The suspension of their star player and the derby loss, saw a significance dip in Manchester United’s form. Anthony Martial & Marcus Rashford, who were having a great season so far, are currently going through a major dip in their performances which has affected Man Utd’s game style.

The team, after the derby loss, scraped out wins against Bournemouth & West Brom, but since then, lost against Bristol City in the EFL Cup, crashing out of the competition, and drew straight three league games against Leicester City, Burnley and Southhampton, ending their 2017 on a low.

Pogba has been unable to play at his top form after coming back from suspension. Lukaku, despite not been scoring goals, has been constantly involved in plays and has created some great chances for his teammates only for them to put them wide.

Only to make matters worse for Jose Mourinho’s men, Lukaku was stretched off in yesterday’s game after suffering a serious head injury due to collision and looks to be out for atleast 2-3 matches. Also, Mourinho confirmed in yesterday’s press conference that Zlatan will be out for 1 month. With Bailly already out for 2-3 months & Valencia also out for unknown time, and Carrick & Fellaini also injured, Man Utd is suffering serious injury crisis on all 3 fronts.

Jose Mourinho needs to come up with solutions to Man Utd’s problems or the point gap will only get worse. Also with the upcoming FA Cup & UCL Knockout Stages, the team needs to strengthen their squad and look for some replacements in the January Transfer Window. The Clock is ticking for Jose Mourinho to sort out the problems.

  1. I think we’ll see Man Utd and Chelsea slowly move their objectives to the cup competitions as the season wears on. Their main focus will be the gap to 5th place so they can focus on winning a trophy. That may be sufficient for Mourinho this season, especially if it’s the Champions League!
