Regular wicket-keeper batsman Wriddhiman Saha has been ruled out of the South African tour due to hamstring injury. Tamil Nadu keeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik has been named as a replacement for the third and final Test between India and South Africa. He will join the team ahead of the final Test, which begins on January 24.
Saha suffered a left hamstring tendon injury ahead of the second Test during training and was subsequently ruled out of the Centurion Test. In his absence, backup wicket-keeper Parthiv Patel was called in but he has been pretty poor with his performance in second test.
Saha broke former Test captain MS Dhoni’s record of most dismissals by an Indian wicket-keeper in a Test when he claimed 10 catches in the series opener in Cape Town.
Karthik has played 23 test since making his debut in 2004, scoring 1000 runs with one century and seven fifties. His last appearance in Test Whites was against Bangladesh at Chittagong in 2010.
The decision to include Karthik in the squad for the third Test will also help him get acquainted to the conditions before the limited-overs series where he’s one of the candidates to take up the middle-order slot.
