Manchester City is running away with the premier league and they are undoubtedly playing the best football on the continent. The citizens currently lead the league by a healthy 13 points, a lead that should take them over the line come May but in this article, we will try to weigh their chances against the three favorites for the title.
- Real Madrid
PSG must be ruining their luck as they drew against the team every group winner wanted to avoid this season. Real Madrid may not be at their flamboyant best but the current holders are still one of the favorites to lift the trophy in Kiev. Record goalscorer Cristiano Ronaldo has been in prolific form in the champions league having netted 9 times already and Gareth Bale is slowly returning to his best. (Applicable only if he doesn’t get injured again). City meanwhile would fancy their chances against Madrid due to Madrid’s troubles at the back and the pace of Sterling, Jesus and Sane and their ruthlessness in front of goal. Real have conquered the world despite looking shaky at the back due to one reason, their superiority in the middle of the park but if there is a midfield trio to match them then it is surely De Bruyne, Silva, and Fernandinho and most importantly Pep’s superior record against the Blancos( 9 wins in 17) means that this year City might just edge past the mighty Real Madrid.
2. Paris Saint Germain
PSG are a team on a mission, a mission to conquer Europe at all costs. They recruited two of the hottest young talents in the world in the name of Kylian Mbappe and Neymar which makes them one of the biggest contenders this season. They surely have a tough job at their hands in the name of the current two times champions Real Madrid in the round of 16 but they are in slightly better form and topped their group containing Bayern Munich which is no fluke. Man city would probably face a stern test against them but if these two teams lock horns late in the season then City would probably have an upper hand due to regular exposure to top quality teams whereas PSG’s chances might be severely hit due to lack of tough games.
Now if there is a team that City can look up to is surely Barcelona. The Catalans are not at their imperial best but Valverde’s pragmatic approach and the inclusion of Paulinho has made them stronger than ever in defense. Even in their first leg round of 16 tie at Stamford Bridge, Barca was clearly second best for a majority of the game but punished the only major mistake by a spirited Chelsea defense. These kind of results are the hallmark of a side that knows how the job is done. City vs Barca though would be tough to predict as both teams are based on the concept of Total football but Barca might just edge it due to their experience and a slightly better defense.
All in all Pep and City are heading in the right direction. Although winning the long-awaited trophy in Kiev might be a little too far for them but it looks like if the Champions League trophy is to head back to England than City look like the team to put your money on.
