Bayern Munich’s star goalkeeper, Manuel Neuer celebrated his 32nd birthday by joining his team-mates on the training grounds after spending a long time recovering from the injury.
The German goalkeeper sustained a fracture of his metatarsal in his left foot last September. Now after a gap of almost six months, Neuer returned to his first full-team training on Tuesday.
Bayern were all too happy to have their first goalkeeper back and tweeted ‘Happy birthday to our #1 and only Manuel Neuer. Our captain is back on the training pitch.’
The injury had kept Neuer out of his German side which faced Spain and Brazil in the international friendlies. But his coach Joachim Low is quite optimistic of his return and confident that Neuer will get time under his belt before the start of the World Cup to be held in Russia.
“If a player plays no role in the preparation, it is difficult to nominate him,” Low said.
“When Manuel came to us on Tuesday, together with Andy Kopke [coach] and Dr [Hans-Wilhelm] Muller-Wohlfahrt [we] had a long conversation with him. Manuel is absolutely on schedule. It is planned that he will still play at Bayern this season.
‘The doctor has assured me that the condition of his scar and the growing together of the bones are absolutely fine and look very good.
‘However, at the current stage he is not allowed to [train] at maximum, he is currently training at 90 per cent and wants to increase to 100 per cent this week so that he is fully resilient.
‘Then he can still get the necessary security in the training sessions. I assume and am very optimistic that Manuel will be present at the World Cup.”
With the return of Manuel Neuer, the Germans and the Bavarians shall get a major boost at the back.
